Sean Jones Cherokee Lick

Sean Jones is a beast of a trumpeter, a brilliant improviser and a loving spirit. He has a spectacular command of the trumpet that is awe-inspiring. He is truly one of the GREATS.

A recent video has been shared on Facebook of Sean playing the jazz composition “Cherokee” by himself. The entire clip is phenomenal! One particular run he does over the bridge section is a line he has painstakingly worked on and perfected.

The lick is interesting both harmonically and rhythmically. Harmonically, he use the upper extensions of the chords and like the bridge’s changes, works it’s way step-wise, downwards throughout. Rhythmically, it’s a cool 3 against 4 run.
